Children and Your Annual Holidays

Our children can sometimes be one of the greatest joys AND challenges of our annual holiday.

In terms of the typical lifecycle, kids and holidays aren't really an issue for a particularly lengthy period of time. Under the age of around 3-4 they're probably too young to really understand the concept of a holiday or have any preferences and by the time they are 17 or 18, the chances are they'll be agitating to go off and spend their break on their own or with friends rather than with you, their dinosaur parents.

So, you have a period to think about of perhaps around 14 or 15 years.

In the case of younger children, typically those between the ages of about 3 and 8-9, a beach-based holiday is likely to keep them happy for most of the time. A great swimming pool, some sand to build with and water to splash around in and they'll be happy. Threw in some local activities, perhaps like a bit of horse riding or amusement centres and the result should be pretty much total satisfaction.

Fortunately, there are plenty of domestic opportunities to spend some pretty good time of that nature in luxurious family holiday accommodation.

Between the ages of about 8 and 13, the challenges for parents start to become a little more complicated. Many kids are showing the first signs of starting to grow up and a simple bucket and spade on the beach is unlikely to keep them happy any longer.

They are likely to want rather more exciting and stimulating diversions - and another complication is added by the fact that they are probably no longer likely to be entirely satisfied with Mum and Dad's company alone. They are ideally going to want accommodation and holiday locations where there are other younger families with children of roughly the same ages they can play with (and usually push the
boundaries with as well).

So, that can contort the choice of holiday destination somewhat for the adults.

Of course for many families, any such difficulties pale into insignificance when compared to trying to find suitable holidays for kids who are in the age range of say roughly 13 to 18. Some children in this age range are struggling to get to grips with their transition to young adulthood and it's not unknown for stresses and strains to arise in terms of their relationship with their parents.

It's also a time many of them will start to discover the opposite sex and things such as going out for a night on their own plus other forbidden fruits like alcohol.

True, the challenges for parents with children of this age group are not restricted to holidays but the annual break can be a particular hurdle to navigate. Teenagers who find themselves in accommodation with a few other kids of their age around and a relatively sedate environment around their hotel or apartment, may well become quickly bored and that can lead to them becoming fractious.

Destination tips can cover a lot of territory, no pun intended. Of course your destination will depend on what your interests are. You may want adventure travel, ...
